What is Subtraction?
Subtraction means taking away!
When we subtract, we start with a number and take some away. What's left is our answer! Pictures help us see how subtraction works.
How to Subtract with Pictures
1️⃣ Count all the pictures first
2️⃣ Cross out the number you're taking away
3️⃣ Count what's left - that's your answer!
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Fruit Subtraction
There are 5 apples. We eat 2 apples. How many are left?
5 apples - 2 apples = ? apples
Example 2: Balloon Pop!
There are 7 balloons. 3 balloons pop. How many are still floating?
7 balloons - 3 balloons = ? balloons
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use everyday objects: Practice with snacks, toys, or buttons - "You have 5 crackers, you eat 2, how many are left?"
- Make it a game: Play "subtraction scavenger hunt" where they collect items and subtract as they go.
- Draw together: Have your child draw pictures to represent subtraction problems - it reinforces the concept.
